Tesla’s Elon Musk reveals ‘Rocketing’ details on next-gen Roadster’s SpaceX thrusters

Tesla is notorious for wild designs and insane specs that often become even crazier while in production. The Cybertruck is a great example of this. The vehicle is designed quite differently from any other pickup in the market. But that’s Tesla. The company seems to target crazy ideas, and among present-day auto-makers, it actually follows through.

The next-generation Roadster is positioned to become Tesla’s halo car, the physical representation of electric propulsion’s indisputable excellence to the internal combustion engine. During its reveal, the new Roadster shocked the auto industry with its overly-impressive details, headlined of course by its 0-60 mph time of 1.9 seconds, its top speed of over 250 mph, and its range of 620 miles per charge.

But then CEO Elon Musk shared something even crazier:

these are the specs of the Roadster’s base model.

So there are even more extreme versions of the next-generation Roadster. Musk has mentioned included within this is the “SpaceX Package,” named so as the vehicle uses the private space company’s Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel (COPV), also used in the SpaceX’s Falcon 9. Even the general concept of using such elements in a road-going vehicle is insane.

Elon Musk stated bluntly at Jay Leno’s Garage, he is very serious.

Standing aside his flagship supercar and the newly-released crossover Model Y, Musk and Leno were featured in a promo video teasing the next-generation Roadster. Leno joked that sometimes Musk’s ideas seem so outrageous that he can’t tell if the CEO is kidding or not. Musk responded referring to the Roadster’s rocket thrusters, he is serious. He continued to describe exactly how the “main” thruster of the next-generation vehicle works.

“We’re gonna use ultra high pressure compressed air. It’s a cold gas thruster. The main thruster will be behind the license plate. So for acceleration, it drops the license plate, and behind the license plate is a rocket thruster. It’s like full-on James Bond,” Musk boasted.

With his SpaceX Package, the next-generation Roadster will very likely be a very difficult vehicle to match. The all-electric supercar will set new records in the Nurburgring, and the Roadster’s acceleration will feel like the Space Shuttle, pulling 3 Gs when it launches.

That being considered, Musk also stated that the Roadster will be produced in only limited quantities. He expects the vehicle to see a production of only 10,000 units per year. Just a fraction of the volume of the company’s other vehicles, including the Model S and Model X. However, in the world of supercars that almost bend physics with their audacious performance, 10,000 units annually could be enough to disrupt the entire supercar industry.
